Chaol is described as a tall man in his early twenties, with short, auburn hair and brown eyes. He had a humid sense of humor, is stern, sober, often sardonic, devoted with his whole heart to his duties. As shown in the Throne of Glass, he is a skilled swordsman and has got skills in using many different kinds of weapons.
Although Hamel does not make many appearances in the books or novellas,  he is roughly described as a tall, handsome man with long, auburn hair and steel-grey eyes. He might have been in his early thirties, perhaps forties.

Arobynn is known to be extremely ruthless, cunning and manipulative. He planned to use Celaena as a weapon against the Adarlan Empire, giving her no choice but to become his trainee, and later threatening her into repaying all expenses he had made after saving her from the Avery River and taking under his wings.

Hamel is first introduced in the moment he saves princess Aelin, eight years old by the time, from the frozen banks of the Avery River. He threatens her to join him and become his trainee, otherwise he'd return her to Adarlan's soldiers. Arobynn renamed the girl, and wanted to use her against the Havilliards.

==Trivia==
Soon, Celaena became on of the best assassins he had ever had, right next to Sam Cortland, his past lover's son, whom he took care of after his mother's death. Hamel was not a gentle man, and as stated by Sardothien, he once gave her a choice if she wanted to break her hand purposely, or let him do this, as a punishment.

*In Queen of Glass his surname is Wydrael.
When his adoptive daughter was sixteen, she and Sam had gone to the Skulls Bay to get the slaves for Arobynn, who were the repayment of old debts. After Celaena had freed all of them, he had her beaten up. Brutally, to make it hurt, but also not to mutilate her permanently. Sardothien and Cortland moved out a couple of years ago, wanting independence from their guardian. Weeks after their deparment, Arobynn and the king of Adarlan, Dorian's father, had Celaena captured and put into Endovier, whilst Sam was killed.
